The Jackson County Tournament is a fun event I get to cover each year.

It can also be unpredictable, which makes it odd that I try to predict it. Just go easy on me if (when) I miss. Here goes:

Varsity Girls

Quarterfinals

› No. 2 NSM vs. No. 7 PRV — North Sand Mountain’s height in the low post proves to be a big difference. NSM 60, PRV 30

No. 3 Skyline vs. No. 6 Woodville — The archrivals face off in the quarterfinals for the second straight season. Skyline 62, Woodville 35

› No. 4 Section vs. No. 5 North Jackson — This should be good quarterfinal game in either division. North Jackson has been surging since a slow start. Meanwhile, Section has been steady against a tough schedule. Section 53, North Jackson 46

Semifinals

No. 1 Pisgah vs. Section — The teams meet for the second time in a semifinal game. Pisgah defeated the Lions in the Sand Mountain Tournament semifinals. The Eagles’ defensive pressure forced 32 Section turnovers in that game, so protecting the basketball will be crucial for Section to spring the upset.      Pisgah 65, Section 52

NSM vs. Skyline — The teams played a nail-biter earlier this season, with NSM rallying late to force and eventually win in overtime. Skyline is looking to return to the championship game for the last two seasons. If the Vikings can rebound with the taller Bison, they can make it three. Skyline 61, NSM 60

Championship

Pisgah vs. Skyline — The teams meet in the finals for the third straight season, and Skyline hopes to dethrone the three-time defending champion. Limiting Pisgah’s star Annie Hughes offensively will be critical to those hopes. These are two teams that are expected to make deep postseason runs, so expect a postseason type performance from each. Pisgah 68, Skyline 63

Varsity Boys

Quarterfinals

› No. 2 Pisgah vs. No. 7 PRV — The Eagles get the tournament started with a solid performance. Pisgah 75, PRV 45

No. 3 North Jackson vs. No. 4 Woodville — Both teams want to play fast, so if you blink, you could miss an offensive possession. North Jackson 88, Woodville 72

› No. 4 NSM vs. No. 5 Skyline — Skyline would like to avenge a 99-75 loss to the Bison from earlier this season. Both young squads would get a boost from advancing. NSM 80, Skyline 75

Semifinals

› No. 1 Section vs. NSM — The teams played a extremely high-scoring, fast-paced game the first time they met. I don’t expect either to tap the breaks in the rematch. Section 93, NSM 80

› Pisgah vs. North Jackson — This is sort of a revenge game for North Jackson, which lost a late lead in a 71-67 loss at Pisgah last month. It also pits Chiefs coach and PHS alum Zac Barringer against his former coach, Woody Beard. North Jackson 73, Pisgah 71

Championship Game

Section vs. North Jackson — It’s the final opportunity for a senior-laden Section team to claim a county title, and I don’t think they let that opportunity go to waste. Section 77, North Jackson 66
