State Winner

Ben Gossett, a senior at Scottsboro High School, has been named the state winner of the Voice of Democracy essay contest. He is congratulated by Nathan Green, VFW Commander, and Larry Becker, District Commander. Gossett was sponsored in this contest by VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) Post 6073. He advances to the national competition.

A senior at Scottsboro High School has won the 2019-2020 VFW Voice of Democracy essay contest at the state level after taking the top spot in the post and district competitions. 

Ben Gossett was recently notified that he had won the Alabama contest.  He was sponsored by local VFW Post 6073.

Gossett was informed by VFW Post 6073 Commander Nathan Green and District Commander Larry Becker of his winning at the state level.  He will now advance to the national competition which will be in Washington, D. C.

This year’s essay theme was “What Makes America Great.”  Gossett first won the post competition.  He then advanced to district competition where he also came in first.  By winning at the state level, Ben has won an all-expense paid trip to the national competition.

The annual VFW Voice of Democracy essay competition provides high school students with a unique opportunity to express themselves in regard to a democratic and patriotic themed essay.  Nearly 40,000 high school students across the country enter the competition. 

The national winner will receive a $30,000 scholarship paid directly to the university, college, or vocational/technical of his/her choice.

Gossett is an outstanding student at Scottsboro High School where he excels in both academics and athletics.  He serves as president of the National Honor Society and is an All A student.

This top student plans to get a degree in biochemistry and pursue oncology in graduate school. Gossett is the son of Amanda and Gordon Gossett. 

His grandparents are Ada Gossett, Rebecca Bolstad, and Greg Blake.  He has a younger sister, Maddie.
