An Indiana man was arrested on Thursday morning on animal cruelty charges.
Authorities say Jasen Charles Howard, 42 of Wheatfield, Indiana, hung a puppy from a tree in Section.
Jackson County Chief Deputy Rocky Harnen said a witness saw Howard take the puppy into the woods. The witness went into the woods to check on the dog after Howard left and found it hanging.
Harnen said the witness cut down the puppy and called the sheriff’s office and Section police. He said the puppy was taken in in by animal control and it is okay.
Harnen said when authorities stopped Howard’s car, he told them the dog had parvo, but he didn’t have a gun to put it out of its misery. He said a test for parvo was administered on the puppy, and it came back negative.
Howard had another dog with him when he was stopped, and it was also taken by animal control. Howard was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.
Howard’s bond was set at $5,300.
