A local man has been charged with child abuse, involving a 20-month-old child of his girlfriend.

Investigator Rick Bremer, of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, said Layne Heath Gerbig, 24 of Woodville, is accused of leaving cigarette burns on the child.

“The child also has bruises to his head and face,” said Bremer.

Bremer said the child’s grandmother notified authorities after her daughter called her about what turned out to be a cigarette burn.

Bremer arrested Gerbig Thursday at his place of employment in Huntsville.

Gerbig was placed in the Jackson County Jail, where he later was released on a $75,000 bond.
