Republicans sweep Jackson County races

Republicans swept the local races Tuesday night. There were 15,838 ballots cast in Jackson County. Of those ballots, 7,714 (82%) were cast as a straight Republican ticket.

Tim Guffey defeated Sadie Bias in the race for County Commission Chairman.

Guffey – 11,512 (74%)

Bias – 4,019 (26%)

Danny Rich won the County Commission District One race by defeating Jack Smith.

Rich – 12,016 (78%)

Smith – 3,422 (22%0

Jason Venable was elected to a second term on the County Commission, defeating Jack Allen.

Venable – 11,697 (75%)

Allen – 3,782 (25%)

Chuck Phillips defeated George Lewis, and was elected to his third term as Sheriff.

Phillips – 12,760 (82%)

Lewis – 2,801 (18%)

Mike Matthews was elected to his first term on the Jackson County Board of Education District 1. He defeated Kenneth Storey.

Matthews – 8,060 (75%)

Storey – 2,649 (25%)

A local amendment was passed that will authorize Cumberland Mountain Water and Fire Protection Authority to provide natural gas service in the county within the service area of the authority. It passed with 91% percent of the vote, and received 11,718 yes votes.
