The man involved in a courthouse shooting last September is dead, according to Chief Deputy Rocky Harnen of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.
Harnen said the body of Fred Swearengin was located near Hytop in a hunting area Wednesday morning.
“His vehicle had been found about two weeks ago,” said Harnen. “The person who found it reported it [Tuesday].”
Harnen said Swearengin, 72, was found about 300-400 yards from his vehicle. Harnen didn't say a cause of death, but did say there was no suspicious activity.
Last September, Swearengin walked into the Jackson County Courthouse, allegedly armed with a handgun on his side. After being refused entry by courthouse security deputies, Swearengin drew his weapon and was shot.
Harnen said a Jackson County Grand Jury indicted Swearengin on an attempted assault first degree charge.
