Cloud’s Pizza and More has been a staple in the town of Higdon for almost 30 years. Since they opened in 1991, they have expanded their menu, they have expanded their dining area, and they make some of the best pizza in Jackson County.
Cloud’s started on a whim. After church on Sunday’s Leon and Patsy Cloud would take their family to Pizza Hut. One day, Leon asked Patsy if they could open a pizza place. She agreed, and the business took off. The Cloud’s bought the old Mt. Olive Baptist Church building, gutted it, and moved it to their current location. People would come to the restaurant and say that they would never make it, and that a pizza parlor would not make it out in the middle of nowhere.
“And here we are, 28 years later,” said Annette Perry, the Clouds’ daughter and current owner of the restaurant.
Cloud’s started by just selling pizza. Since then, the menu has grown exponentially. They still have their famous pizza, but they have added hamburgers, chicken finger plates, hot dogs, salads, and all kinds of sandwiches and sides. Perry said their most popular menu item, however, is their cheese sticks. They have several specialty pizzas, such as the Cloud’s Combo which has pepperoni, beef, onions, sausage, mushrooms, and green peppers. They have a meat lovers pie, a bacon cheeseburger pizza, and a taco pizza. The taco pizza is topped with taco sauce, meat, tomatoes, onions, black olives, cheddar and mozzarella cheese. Cloud’s also offers Stromboli. Stromboli is an Italian turnover filed with whatever someone can imagine. At Cloud’s, you can get a taco, steak, BBQ, grilled chicken, buffalo chicken, or pizza with any toppings in your stromboli. Cloud’s also has a hot food bar during the week from Monday through Thursday, but it is served during lunchtime only.
Cloud’s has always taken pride in serving the best food they can to their customers. They make their own dough, patty their hamburgers fresh to order, and marinate their own grilled chicken. Perry said that mostly everything on the menu is handmade. They use all of the best ingredients for their pizza, and their cheese is fresh from Wisconsin. The ingredients are not the only thing that sets Cloud’s apart though.
“There’s something about that old pizza oven in there,” said Perry.
Leon Cloud bough the pizza oven used when he was getting ready to open the restaurant. Perry does not know exactly how old it is, but she does know that there is something special about that old oven. She said they can make a cheese stick at home using the same ingredients and following the same procedure they do at the restaurant, but it will not taste the same as it does when it is cooked at the restaurant.
“It’s just not the same,” said Perry.
Nearly 28 years after opening, Cloud’s is still going strong and holding on to the promise of great food at a fair price. Perry credits their loyal customers for keeping them going. Since they opened in October 1991, Cloud’s has expanded their menu and their dining room. Perry said that sometimes the expanded dining room is still not enough to hold their many hungry customers. She said their busiest time is during lunch and right before they close at night. They also offer carry out orders.
