Another popular community event has fallen victim to the coronavirus (COVID-19). It is with great disappointment that the annual IMPACT Low Country Luau has been canceled. This event was scheduled for May 1.

This announcement was made by the Jackson County 21st Century Council IMPACT Learning Center Board of Directors. A number of sponsorships had already been made and items donated for the annual silent auction.

“We are deeply saddened that we have had to cancel our Low Country Luau,” said Cathy T. Mitchell, director of IMPACT.  “Many things were taken into consideration as this painful decision had to be made.  Due to these unprecedented circumstances and concern for the health and safety of our patrons plus the stay at home order from Gov. Ivey, we came to this decision.”

“As always we were looking forward to this year’s Luau which would have been our 10th, and we are terribly disappointed,” added Mitchell.

The Luau allows IMPACT to continue to provide programs and expand upon them as the need arises.  According to a letter to patrons from Mitchell and Dr. Brad Bradford, chairman of the IMPACT Board of Directors, some funding may be lost due to the cancellation of the Luau, but the goals will remain the same.

“We will continue to help individuals, businesses, and schools in the community with workforce development and educational goals,” said Bradford. “We appreciate your continued support and partnership.”

Amber Harrington, member of the Board of Directors, said, “I would like to thank this amazing community for supporting the IMPACT Luau for ten years.  We have used the funds raised to make a positive IMPACT in our schools and the community as a whole.  I look forward to a bigger event celebrating with all of you in 2021 for the tenth annual Luau event.”

IMPACT appreciates the sponsorships that had already been made and is happy to say that most of the sponsors have graciously agreed to allow them to retain their donations despite the cancellation of the event.  These people will be receiving more information from IMPACT regarding their donations.

Despite the cancellation of the Luau, IMPACT will still accept donations to help fund their many community and school projects. Anyone who would like additional information may contact IMPACT at 256-218-2121.
