The Jackson County Board of Education approved the purchase of six 2021 Blue Bird buses in the amount of $549,982 at its regular meeting Thursday evening.
The county is going to get in a rotation to where it can buy six new buses every year and get rid of six older buses. It is trying get a more consistent rotation with school buses. These new buses will be air conditioned. The state has been pushing for air-conditioned buses, and Jackson County is trying to get ahead of the curve. These new buses will be used on the longest routes in the county.
The board elected officers at its meeting on Thursday. Chad Gorham was elected as the board president, and Dr. Angela Guess was elected as the board vice president. It also set a meeting schedule. The board will meet on the third Thursday of each month. Work sessions will begin at 5 p.m., and regular meetings will start at 6 p.m.
For general business, the board approved the financial statements and list of reconciled bank accounts for Sept. 2019. The total payroll expenditures were $3,769,552.54 and the total non-payroll expenditures were $2,322,300.82. It approved the 2019-2020 District Technology Plan. It approved a bid by Hotel and Restaurant Supply in the amount of $16,995 for the purchase of a combination oven for North Sand Mountain High School.
The board approved the Title II Federal Programs Class Size Reduction Units for 2019-2020. Each school received a 50% unit. Those schools are Bridgeport Middle School, North Sand Mountain High School, Pisgah High School, Section High School and Skyline High School.
The board of education also approved several personnel actions as well. It accepted the resignation of Kerri Flowers, a teacher at Bryant School effective Jan. 1, 2020.
It extended a leave of absence for Courtney Lacy, Pre-K aide at Hollywood, from Nov. 25, 2019 through May 22, 2020. It approved a leave of absence for Jessica Hullander, county-wide instructional aide, from Nov. 21 through May 22, 2020. It approved a leave of absence for Brandis Thomas, CNP worker at Bryant School from Dec. 2 through Dec. 20.
It employed Joy Fowler as a four-hour custodian at Woodville effective Nov. 22.
It approved the resignation of Tiffany McDonald and Keith Haynes as head softball coach and assistant softball coach at Section High School. It approved Zach Hart as the head softball coach at Section High School. It also approved Eddie Holder a boat captain for Section High School.
It approved Jeremy Moore, Gerald Jones, Chris Davis, Michael Sanders, Chad Weldon, James Chappelear and Shane Cooper as boat captains for North Sand Mountain.
