Patrick Woosley knows the butcher business inside and out. He has been in the business since 2003, and he has been the owner of Patrick’s Meat Market since 2015.
Woosley started working at Scottsboro Meats in 2003. He was working at K-Mart and did not know what he wanted to do with his life. One of his friends asked if he wanted to come work at the meat market. After that, he never looked back. Woosley worked at Scottsboro Meats for 11 years, and he took over the business when it closed in 2014. Patrick’s Meat Market opened in 2015 thanks to a couple of investors who put their faith in Woosley to run the business.
Woosley says that running a small business is hard.
“No two days are ever the same,” said Woosley. “There are days when I feel like I need to hire more help, and others where I wonder if I can pay the next light bill.”
He has gone through good days and bad day, but said it is always an adventure. Woosley said that is all part of owning your own business. If he were to give advice to someone opening their own business, he would tell them not to give up as soon as something goes wrong.
“You’re not going to become a self-made millionaire overnight,” said Woosley. “Believe in yourself and believe in your product.”
He said sometimes he just has to grin and bear it and keep on going.
Woosley said one of the big things that has helped him keep a successful business is his customer service. He has always been a people person. He has never met a stranger. Everywhere he goes, he sees someone he knows, or he finds someone to talk to. Woosley just loves to talk and get to know his customers. He knows exactly what his customers want before they walk in the door. Woosley will even custom fit orders for his customers.
Patrick’s Meat Market has all the basic cuts of meat, but he also has alligator meat, crawfish and stuffed chicken breasts.
The chicken breasts are stuffed with either broccoli and cheese or pepper jack cheese and mushrooms. He has all kinds if potato wedges, french fries and curly fries. Patrick’s Meat Market has everything from frozen chicken fingers to New York strips.
He also has to know how to buy accordingly. Woosley said it’s not like putting toilet paper on the shelf that could sit there for months. If he buys too much, the meat will go bad.
If he doesn’t have enough, he will lose a customer. He has perfected that part of the job, and this time of year is when things start to get busy for Woosley. He said the start of football season to the end of the holiday season is the busiest time for him. He said people come from Florence to shop at Patrick’s Meat Market.
