Jackson County Board of Education member Charles West said on Monday he thinks the board will make an appointment this week to fill the vacancy left by the death of board member Cecil Gant.

“I think we will,” said West. “At least I hope we do.”

The school board will meet Friday, at 8 a.m. If the school board fails to make an appointment, it will be passed on to State Superintendent Eric Mackey.

“We are better off Friday to get it done,” said West. “We don’t want to leave it up to the state superintendent.”

At the last school board meeting, over a week ago, three nominations were made but none passed. Retired educators Linda Smith and Dwight Griffith, along with Chris Knight were nominated.

West said Gant requested, before his passing, that Smith or Roger Pruett be appointed to fill his seat. However, that didn’t happen, and West said he doesn’t expect to happen Friday.

“I have someone in mind to nominate,” said West. “But I am not going to say because I’m afraid it will get cut off at the pass.”

The school board will meet in the Teacher Resource Center at the Board of Education.
