After a Thanksgiving meal hosted by churches and businesses in Flat Rock, Misty Gilbert was inspired to help families struggling to provide food. She invited local pastors to start a food pantry and thus, Flat Rock Community Center was started. The community center includes a food pantry and the New Beginnings Thrift Store.

All of profits from the store help fund the pantry. The center has grown from serving 8 families in 2009 to around 270 families or 500 individuals today. The food pantry supplies a 50-100 pound bag of food to families on the fourth Thursday of each month.

Flat Rock Community Center has received donated land, building, funding to start the community center and other items such as cabinets, shelves, sheet rock and paint from members of the community.

Recently the community center received a donated air conditioning unit that was installed free of charge by Southern Heating and Cooling.

Chairperson Wanda Lyda encourages people wishing to get involved to volunteer at Flat Rock Community Center, hold a food drive, or donate gently used clothes, shoes, small appliances but Lyda asks that people refrain from donating large appliances or furniture.

For more information contact the Flat Rock Community Center at 256-632-2195 or Wanda Lyda at 256-506-7257. Flat Rock Community Center is located at 894 County Road 326.
