The 5th Annual Scottsboro BBQ Festival will be held on the Downtown Square on Saturday, Oct. 12. This year’s event will feature some of the original activities, but there have been several new events added in 2019.
The Scottsboro BBQ Festival is now a Kansas City Barbecue Society sanctioned event, allowing teams to earn points on a more competitive level. The BBQ contest is a backyard event, therefore, any cook at any level may enter.
Kids and teens may also enter the Kids-Q and Jr. Grill Master competitions. Kids ages 7-12 grill a hamburger, while teens grill a steak. Other activities for kids include a Kids Fun Zone, featuring inflatables, games and other activities.
Back by popular demand is the Barq-Off Dog Parade. Dog owners may enter their dog to parade across a stage and win a variety of awards, including $100 cash for Best in Show. Spay and Neuter Jackson County will receive proceeds from the Dog Parade. The parade starts at 12 p.m.
Another popular event that was added last year is the Cornhole Tournament. The tournament will start in the afternoon where teams will compete for cash prizes and other awards. The tournament will be located inside the Beer & Wine Garden.
The People’s Choice Competition is also gearing up with contestants entering the past several weeks. Cooks enter either a Boston Butt or Dessert in the competition. Visitors to the festival may purchase tickets to sample up to 10 meats and up to 10 desserts, then vote for their favorite. The sampling begins at 1:30 p.m. and awards will be given out at 3:30 p.m.
Several new activities have been added in 2019, including a Car Show around City Hall, sponsored by the Jackson County Cruisers to benefit the backpack program to help feed kids in local schools.
Also new for this year is the highly popular Witches Ride. Women who wish to enter will dress up as witches and decorate their bikes. Registration will be at Patches on Broad Street where witches will ride north to the square. Witches who would like to participate in a shorter ride will join in at Akins Furniture. Witches who wish to walk may enter across from City Hall. Once the witches reach the square, they will throw out candy to kids as they ride/walk around the square. Proceeds from the Witches Ride will benefit Sadye’s Fund.
In the Beer & Wine Garden, starting at 10 a.m. mimosas and sangrias will be available in the garden. Visitors may also purchase a boxed brunch, including scones, muffins, quiche and fruit.
Arts & Crafts and food vendors will be located around the square. Parking is available on Broad Street and surrounding public parking lots. The north, east and south sides of the square will be closed on the day of the festival.
Complete details of each of these activities is available on the Scottsboro BBQ Festival website, as well as registration forms to the various contests. People’s Choice sampling tickets may be purchased at the Sanders Allstate Office on Veterans Drive. For more information, visit www.scottsborobbqfestival.com.
