Brianna Welch and her mother, Tanya Welch recently decided to start a crayon drive for the Children’s Hospital of Birmingham after discovering that the hospital used about 4,000 crayons per week equating to 208,000 crayons every year. Brianna explained that the pair felt that even though this drive did not directly affect their own community, they still felt that this was a need that they could fill.
“We’ve had family and friends that have visited that hospital and they’ve [the hospital] touch our lives and we wanted to touch their lives as well,” said Brianna. Brianna recalled that her mother said, “Brianna, this is something we need to do.” Both women felt that “It [the crayon drive] was laid on our hearts by the Lord.”
After announcing the drive at church, donations flooded in from the community. So far the two women have received over 30,000 crayons, 200 coloring books, 30-40 packs of Play Dough and an assortment of stickers.
The donations will be dropped off at the hospital on Aug. 7. There is currently a drop off box at the First United Methodist Church of Scottsboro. Donations will be accepted year-round. To contact Brianna Welch about donations, call 256-609-4595.
