Jaime Thomas attended the Scottsboro City Council meeting on Monday afternoon to discuss her concerns about 18 wheelers driving through residential neighborhoods in the city.
Thomas lives on the corner of Hayes Street and Garden Drive and said trucks drive through their neighborhood because there are no clear truck route signs posted.
“We are having a horrible problem with 18 wheelers coming through residential areas,” said Thomas.
Thomas said she feels like her life is in danger. She said if a truck hits the power pole near her house, the pole will go through her bedroom. She said that something has to be done. The problem started about a year ago during the construction on Cecil Street and has progressively gotten worse.
She has spoken with the mayor’s office, but said it seemed like they were not concerned enough to do anything. She has spoken with the truck drivers and said they did not care.
She also spoke with Lozier, and she said they did not care either. She said the city needs truck route signs because it is dangerous for 18 wheelers to drive through residential areas and it is only a matter of time before someone gets hurt.
Scottsboro Mayor Robin Shelton said he had met with City Engineer Josh Little and Street Department Director Wayne Moore earlier on Monday and they were in the process of getting a price on a two-feet by eight feet sign for Cecil Street.
Truck routes have been a topic of discussion at previous city council meetings. In a previous meeting, Council President Patrick Stewart brought up the issue because he had received several phone calls from citizens over the last few months about better signage to direct truck drivers.
Stewart said visible signage on Highway 72 and above Cecil Road would help direct truck drivers to the best route and keep them out of residential areas. Stewart said he drives Porter Road every day he works, and he follows a Maples truck at least three out of five days.
He said the primary goal would be to keep trucks from getting into residential areas. When trucks get past Parks Ave, they are in no man’s land. Stewart said better signage would go a long way in keeping truck on road that are easy to navigate.
Stewart said there are some signs to direct truck drivers, but they are too low for the driver to see. He said better signs would be a tremendous help in directing trucks to the most efficient routes.
