One of Scottsboro’s oldest and most well-known restaurants is back. Triple R BBQ reopened its doors three years after the restaurant closed.

Ralph Roberts was part of the original ownership group but sold his half of the restaurant in 2001. He had spent 18 years out of the restaurant business before deciding he wanted to jump back in.

He said he decided to reopen Triple R because he enjoys everything about the restaurant business. He was also tired of driving a truck. He knows the business, and he said the restaurant business is rewarding.

“Instead of retiring 100 percent, I decided to reopen the restaurant,” said Roberts.

Triple R BBQ originally opened on Nov. 21, 1987. Roberts and he brother, Randy, opened the small shotgun building with 26 seats. Since then, Triple R has made two additions to the building. It closed in 2016 after a small fire in the kitchen.

The inside of Triple R is modeled after the front porch of an old log cabin. Roberts and his brother reassembled a 160-year-old log cabin to become the main dining room.

It gives Triple R a hometown feel to go with the homestyle food. Roberts said there was quite a bit of work done before Triple R was able to reopen. He also said there is always work to be done.

BBQ has always been the main dish at Triple R, but Roberts said they have added other plates and dishes to the menu. They offer appetizers like blooming onions, onion rings, fried green tomatoes and fried pickles.

It has several different salads and a stuffed baked potato. Triple R offers sandwiches like pulled pork, smoked sausage, smoked turkey, catfish, smoke house chicken, chicken breast and a turkey club. It also offers a classic hamburger, bacon cheeseburger and a smoke house burger.

The smoke house burger is topped with Applewood smoke bacon, shredded cheese, onion rings and Triple R’s original BBQ sauce. It has BBQ plates with ribs, pulled pork, smoked turkey, BBQ chicken and smoked sausage.

Triple R also offers southern dinner plates like catfish dinners, the Bayou classic with catfish filets over rice with shrimp and etouffee, a catfish and shrimp combo, hamburger steaks, shrimp and grits, salmon, mahi mahi and chicken tenders.

Roberts said Triple R also has a daily special. He said they try to put out the best food they can, and they make all their sauces from scratch.

“We have good food,” said Roberts.

Robert s said everything has been good since he reopened Triple R. He said they stay busy at lunch and dinner, and they get especially busy after church on Sundays. Roberts brought back some of the employees from when the restaurant closed, and he also hired new faces.

He hired Dale Jennings as a general manager and Crystal Winiger as an assistant manager. He said they have done a great job, and they try to make a pleasant environment for employees and customers.

Triple R BBQ does catering, and it is about to start a delivery service.

Triple R is open Tuesday through Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. To place an order, call 256.999.0068. Triple R BBQ is located at 2940 Veterans Drive in Scottsboro.
