Southern All-Sports

Dean Guthrie and his family have been serving the community sports needs for almost 50 years.

Southern All-Sports is one of Scottsboro’s longest lasting businesses. In this day and age, more and more people shop for sporting goods in the big chain retail stores or online.

The fact that Southern All-Sports has stood the test of time just goes to show the great quality and the care Dean Guthrie puts into every product.

Guthrie has several vintage sports posters on the wall, and Southern All-Sports feels like a friendly place to buy anything sports related.

Guthrie’s father opened Southern All-Sports on the courthouse square in 1972. Guthrie was still in high school when he started working at the sporting goods store. He would work after school, and on the weekends while he was still in school. He started working full-time at Southern All-Sports after graduating high school.

Guthrie says his attention to detail and awesome quality products are two of the main reasons he has been able to stay in business for nearly 50 years. He also specializes in a number of products that other businesses do not offer.

Southern All-Sports provides the plaques for the Jackson County Sports Hall of Fame banquet every year. This year, he started providing the plaques for the Huntsville Madison County Sports Hall of Fame.

One of the directors of the Huntsville Madison County Sports Hall of Fame saw one of the plaques Guthrie had made for the Jackson County Sports Hall of Fame, and he wanted to know where the plaque was made.

Guthrie said he could provide a better quality plaque for a better price, and now the Huntsville Madison County Sports Hall of Fame uses plaques from Southern All-Sports.

Southern All-Sports has a great deal to offer its customers. Guthrie does custom laser and diamond engraving. He sells trophies, plaques and awards. He does custom embroidery and monogramming for shirts, jackets, sweatshirts, and even rain jackets.

Guthrie also sells a great deal of University of Alabama and Auburn University decals, car tags, leather belts and wallets. He also has a large amount of sports apparel.

Guthrie does the uniforms and heat press lettering for a large portion of recreational sports teams in Scottsboro. He also has customers across Jackson County and in DeKalb County.

“We sell quite a bit of everything,” said Guthrie.

Guthrie’s work ethic is also one of the reasons his business has been a staple on the square for nearly 50 years. Southern All-Sports is open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

On a normal day, Guthrie goes home after closing to eat supper and do a few chores, then he goes back to the store to catch up on orders. He stays at Southern All-Sports until the early hours of the morning working on orders.

Guthrie said retail is a tough business, but he has definitely had a successful career providing all things sports to people in the area. Next time you are on the square in Scottsboro, check out Southern All-Sports.
