The Scottsboro wrestling team has earned a spot in the 2019 AHSAA State Duals Tournament.
The Wildcats qualified with a second-place finish in the Class 1A-5A Region 8 Duals meet at Madison County High School in Gurley on Saturday.
Scottsboro went 2-1 in the event, posting wins of 66-12 over Madison County and 57-17 over New Hope while suffering a 42-33 loss to region champion Arab.
The runner-up finish means Scottsboro will wrestle Region 7 champion in the opening round of the state tournament at a date still to be determined later this month.
Against Madison County, Scottsboro’s Jordan Porter at 132 pounds, Tanner Shelton (152), Conner Calfee (160), Kolton Clark (195), Caleb Anderson (220) and Bradford Womack (286) all picked up wins via pin while Mason McKenzie (106), Kolby Clark (138), Damian Ramirez (170) and Tre Billingsley (182) won via forfeit.
Against New Hope, Scottsboro’s Mason McKenzie (106), Porter (126), Shelton (152), Calfee (160), Ramirez (170) and Billingsley (195) posted wins via pin while Clark (182), Anderson (220) and Womack (285) each won via forfeit.
Against Arab, Clinton Stewart (113), Calfee (160), Clark (182) won via pin while Anderson (220) won an 8-0 major decision at 220, Womack won a 10-2 major decision at 285 and Shelton won a 10-6 decision at 152.
