Scottsboro swimmers enjoyed a strong showing in the Scottsboro Invitational.

Scottsboro finished third in the combined scores division while its girls finished fourth and its boys were second during a meet that featured the 200-plus swimmers Thursday night at the Rec*Com.

“It was an amazing packed house. This was the largest meet we have ever hosted,” said Scottsboro head coach Shalyn Benson. “I'd like to thank all of the volunteers that made the night a huge success. We also had a huge amount of spectators and Wildcat Nation supporters that made it a super energetic event.”

Scottsboro also honored seniors Mary Cook, Lydia Cook, Shelton McCormack, Paige Megehee, Olyvia Stone and Makenna Worley during the meet.

Whitesburg Christian won the combined (205) and girls (127) divisions while defending Class 1A-5A boys state champion Boaz (119) won the boys division, edging Scottsboro (84) for the top spot. 

The SHS boys had five second-place finishes. John Dalton Sanders placed second in both the 50-yard Freestyle (23.72 seconds) and 100-yard Backstroke (1:04.34) while Levi Webb was second in the 500-yard Freestyle (5:47.70). The 200-yard Medley Relay (1:53.23) team of Sanders, Webb, Luke Armour and Jake Benson and the 400-yard Freestyle Relay (3:48.96) team of Sanders, Webb, Armour and Arlen Parr both posted second-place finishes.

Other Top-10 finishes for Scottsboro were Armour fourth (2:15.05) in the 200-yard Freestyle, fifth (1:05.20) in the 100-yard Butterfly and seventh in the 100-yard Backstroke (1:11.99) while Parr was fifth (6:39.10) in the 500-yard Freestyle and ninth (2:35.68) in the 200-yard Individual Medley. Stone finished sixth (1:16.38) and Jake Benson seventh (1:17.10) in the 100-yard Breaststroke while Benson was ninth (26.71) in the 50-yard Freestyle, and Gabriel Lyle 10th (2:22.75) in the 200-yard Freestyle. The 200-yard Freestyle Relay team of Parr, Harrison Stone, Lyle and Jake Benson was sixth (1:50.17) and the team of Holder Benson, Jake Vance, William Pork and Joseph Gardner was ninth (2:09.56). Thee 200-yard Medley Relay (2:11.31) team of Joseph Gardner, Stone, Lyle and William Porch finished ninth.

Meanwhile, Scottsboro (61) finished behind runner-up Cullman (99) and third-place Randolph (69) in the girls standings.

Second-place finishers for the SHS girls were Paula Nunez second in the 200-yard Freestyle (2:15.33) and the 500-yard Freestyle (5:58.97) and Paige Giles in the 100-yard Backstroke (1:08.29). The relay team of Giles, Jessica Vincent, Nunez and Olyvia Stone finished second in the 400-yard Freestyle Relay (4:14.85).

Other Top-10 finishes for Scottsboro included Giles finishing third in the 100-yard Butterfly (1:08.38), Jessica Vincent seventh (2:32.90) and Kimberly Calderon-Diaz ninth (2:35.76) in the 200-yard Freestyle, Megehee ninth (3:00.99) and Ashton Baker 10th (3:18.89) in the 200-yard IM, Vincent 10th (1:22.11) in the 100-yard Butterfly and Calderon-Diaz 10th (1:31.52) in the 100-yard Backstroke. 

The 200-yard Medley Relay team of Nunez, Stone, Giles and Cook finished third (2:06.39). The relay team of Cook, McCormack, Megehee and Vincent finished seventh (2:02.68) in the 200-yard Freestyle Relay while the team of Grayson Gattis, Alice Merck, Sarah Vance and Lydia Cook placed 10th (2:13.99).
