The Scottsboro baseball team took care of business on Tuesday.
If it does so again today, the Wildcats will win an area championship.
Scottsboro defeated visiting Brewer 10-0 in five innings to move within a victory of securing the Class 5A Area 15 championship.
Scottsboro (14-7, 5-1) travels to Florette to play Brewer today at 4:30 p.m. The Wildcats lock up the area title with a win today or an Arab loss to Guntersville. Scottsboro and Arab are tied atop the area standings with 4-1 records, but Scottsboro holds the head-to-head tiebreaker between the teams.
Against Brewer (5-23, 0-5), Scottsboro opened up a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Reed Latimer tripled and scored on Peyton Grant’s fielder’s choice, while Riley Bennett’s two-run double drove in Grant and Bryant Phillips, who was courtesy running for pitcher Christian Herberholz, who drew a walk. Ethan Wininger (walk) later scored on Camden Matthews’ RBI groundout.
Scottsboro’s lead grew to 7-0 in the bottom of the third when Ethan Clark walked and scored Kyle Murphy’s double, Murphy scored when Grant reached on a Brewer error and Grant scored on Herberholz’s RBI single.
The Wildcats ended the game via the mercy rule in the bottom of the fifth when Murphy’s RBI single plated Bennett (single) and Latimer’s two-run double drove home Clark (single) and Landon Grider, who was courtesy running for catcher Dalton Wood after he reached on a fielder’s choice.
Bennett and Murphy both finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs for the Wildcats while Herberholz was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Latimer was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Herberholz improved to 3-0 on the mound in area games for Scottsboro. He allowed only one hit and recorded 10 strikeouts. Cameron Brown’s first-inning single was Brewer’s only hit.
