The Scottsboro baseball team gave head coach Blake Talley a win against his former team.
Pitchers Christian Herberholz and Lane Pitts combined on a two-hitter while Dalton Wood and Ethan Wininger combined for five RBIs in Scottsboro’s 6-1 win over fellow Class 5A team Madison County Tuesday night in Gurley.
Talley was an assistant coach at Madison County before being hired at Scottsboro.
Herberholz got the win on the mound, recording eight strikeouts while allowing one run on one hit and two walks over five innings. Pitts struck out four in two innings of work. Scottsboro also played error free defense behind its pitchers.
Scottsboro (5-3) jumped ahead 2-0 in the top of the first inning. Reed Latimer led off the game with a triple and scored on a passed ball, and Wininger drove in Landon Grider — he was pinch running after catcher Peyton Grant walked — with an RBI double.
In the third, Wood hit a three-run homer to right field — Camden Matthews and Kyle Murphy were aboard after being hit a by a pitch and drawing a walk respectively — to give the Wildcats a 5-0 lead. After Madison County (5-2) got a run in the bottom half of the inning, Scottsboro got it right back when Ethan Wininger reached on a Madison County error on an RBI groundout that plated Grider.
Latimer and Grant (double) both had two hits and a walk for Scottsboro while Herberholz, Wininger and Wood had one hit apiece. Austin Mills drove in a run for Madison County.
Section 7, New Hope 2 — At Section, the Lions scored three runs each in the fourth and fifth innings to surge past New Hope on Tuesday.
Section (2-1) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Trevier Porter’s RBI single. After falling behind 2-1 in the top of the fourth, the Lions regained the lead in the fourth when Drake McCutchen had an RBI single and Cole Woods and McCutchen both scored on a passed ball. McCutchen had another RBI single in the fifth while Porter scored on a wild pitch and Taylor Payne scored a passed ball.
McCutchen finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs while Jacob Gentry went 3-for-4 and scored a run. Woods doubled for the Lions while Porter, Jonathan Carroll, Wiley McCutchen and Blake Henry all singled.
Porter pitched four innings and got the win on the mound for Section. He allowed two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out two. Taylor Payne struck out two while allowing just two hits to get a three-inning save.
Lindsay Lane 9, Woodville 2 — At Athens, Lindsay Lane scored five runs in the first two innings to take control against the Panthers on Tuesday.
Blake Lands tripled and scored a run for Woodville (0-4) while and Ben Minor singled and scored a run and Josh Drawbaugh and Jacob Chambers both singled.
