The Skyline varsity boys basketball team worked overtime for an impressive victory over a Class 6A ranked team.
The Class 1A No. 2-ranked Vikings edged 6A No. 10 Buckhorn 62-61 in overtime at Skyline High School Monday night.
Skyline (22-3) trailed 14-13, 37-24 and 46-37 at the quarter breaks before rallying to force overtime at 57-all and winning on Jaylon Clements’ free throw with 6.6 seconds remaining. Buckhorn (18-9) missed a game-winning shot attempt as time expired.
“Really good win,” said Skyline coach Ronnie McCarver. “We started out bad, turning the ball over against their pressure, and when we got fouled, we missed our free throws. The second half, everything we did bad in the first half, we started doing right. We kind of caught up to the speed of the game and calmed down.”
Collin Lockard scored 25 points for the Vikings. Clements and Jaxen White netted 12 points each while Dawson Wynn added nine and Connor Lockard had four. Jaylon Chapman scored 22 points for Buckhorn.
“That was good for us,” McCarver said. “I don’t think we’ll see anybody pressure us like that, and that’s why we wanted to play them. They played really good, fast man-to-man defense (in the half-court). We needed to see that for down the road.”
