Christian Herberholz’s college baseball scholarship offers grew to include a Division I school recently.
The Scottsboro senior outfielder/pitcher received an offer from the University of Tennessee-Martin last week. UT-Martin plays in the Ohio Valley Conference, the same conference as schools Jacksonville State and Tennessee Tech, which advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals this past season.
Herberholz also holds offers from Wallace State-Hanceville, Montevallo, Shelton State, Lawson State, Snead State and Central Alabama.
During his junior season at Scottsboro last spring, Herberholz went 2-1 with two saves in 14 appearances on the mound. He recorded 33 strikeouts and a 3.40 ERA over 24 2/3 innings, and batters hit just .223 against him. At the plate, Herberholz posted .311 batting average and an on-base percentage of .427 while recording five doubles, 15 RBIs, nine walks and 13 runs.
Stevens to coach Section cross country — The Section cross country team will be under the direction of a different “Coach Stevens” this fall.
Tammy Stevens retired from teaching and coaching after the 2017-18 school year, closing out her 30-plus year career as a teacher and coach of multiple sports at Section High School.
Her son Stormy Stevens, who is also Section’s varsity girls basketball coach, is taking over as cross country coach.
Stormy Stevens is a 2007 Section alum, a former three-sport standout that later led Woodville to the Class 1A Girls Basketball Final Four during the 2012-13 season. He directed Section to the Class 2A Girls Northeast Regional basketball tournament during his first season as Section head coach last winter.
Alsobrook to coach NSM volleyball — Samantha Alsobrook is the new head volleyball coach at North Sand Mountain.
Alsobrook is in her fifth season as a coach. The Soddy Daisy, Tennessee native previously coached at Mountain View Christian Academy.
“I am proud to be one of the Herd here in Bison Country,” Alsobrook said.
NSM restarted its volleyball program in 2017 after a 14-year break.
Local coaches win AHSADCA Golf Tournament — Four Jackson County coaches teamed up to win the Alabama High School Athletic Director and Coaches Association’s annual golf tournament during AHSADCA All-Star Week.
Skyline varsity girls and boys basketball head coach Ronnie McCarver and Skyline assistant T.J. Perry, Section baseball and basketball assistant coach Chance McCarver and former North Jackson baseball coach Ryan Rogers shot a team score of 57 to win the scramble tournament at Lagoon Golf Course in Montgomery.
State Volleyball rankings released — AL.com released the state volleyball rankings on Thursday, and several area opponents of local teams made the rankings.
All three of Scottsboro’s Class 5A Area 15 opponents are ranked: No. 2 Guntersville, No. 5 Arab and No. 8 Brewer.
Two of Pisgah’s Class 3A Area 15 opponents, Geraldine and Plainview, are ranked third and fourth respectively in the 3A poll. NSM’s 2A Area 15 opponent Fyffe is ranked sixth in 2A and Woodville’s 1A Area 15 foe Lindsay Lane is fourth in 1A.
