The Scottsboro varsity and junior varsity boys cross country teams conquered at the Pepsi Challenge on Saturday. 

Both teams dominated their way to championships in their respective races during Lawrence County High School’s annual meet at H.A. Alexander Mini Park in Moulton.

The Scottsboro varsity boys, led by Cooper Atkins’s top finish (15:55.28) by more than a minute over the second-place finisher, closed with a winning low score of 24 points. The Wildcats finished 36 points ahead of runner-up Huntsville and 46 in front of third-place James Clemens in the Large School (Class 5A-7A) Varsity Boys Race.

Scottsboro had four of the top-six finishers and five of the top 10. Following Atkins’ first-place effort, Evan Hill finished third (16:59.48) while Rex Green was fourth (17:01.19), Noah Bonsall sixth (17:05.93) and Benson Atkins 10th (17:20.11). Also for the Wildcats, Josh Hill finished 18th (17:42.84) while Jackson Howes was 33rd (18:33.42), Ridge Wells 45th (19:23.74), Wilson Hill 63rd (20:00.65), Cameron Estes 79th (21:03.11), Aidan Cantrell 87th (21:16.75), John Merritt 97th (21:49.32), Skylar Reichle 107th (22:47.46), Christian Kilgore 108th (22:47.92), Nathan Bearden 120th (24:20.17) and Camden Thrasher 129th (28:09.27).

The win was the first for the Scottsboro varsity boys team this season. The Wildcats finished second in the season-opening Black & Gold Classic on Aug. 29.

Meanwhile, Scottsboro won its second straight junior varsity boys two-mile race. The Wildcats closed with a winning low score of 50 points, four better than runner-up Huntsville.

Hamilton Richardson won his second race of the season -- the freshman also won the season-opening Black & Gold race title -- with a time of 10:52.50.

Stephen Jones finished third  (11:27.27) and Johny Felix fourth (11:33.75) for the Wildcats while Mcgee Kilgore was 16th (12:13.00), Cole Snyder 30th (12:56.64), Marcos Matias 46th (13:41.67), Brady Strickland 48th (13:44.08), River Green 50th (13:57.05), Josh Laney 99th (16:46.29), Sawyer McWilliams 105th (16:59.07) and Brady Turner 106th (17:02.02).

Varsity girls — Scottsboro posted a third-place finish in the Pepsi Challenge’s Large School (Class 5A-7A) Varsity Girls Race. The Wildcats finished with  team score of 96. James Clemens (31) edged host Lawrence County (33) by two points for the title.

Maddie Gossett led the Wildcats with a fourth-place finish (20:22.98). Emma Bradford followed in 22nd place (22:44.76) for Scottsboro while Lauren Paradise was third (23:08.11), Shelton Linville 32nd (24:06.27), Collin Bradford 48th (25:51.64) and Hannah Cloud 52nd (26:48.44).

Junior varsity girls — Scottsboro (40 points) finished 12 points back of winner Huntsville in the junior varsity girls two-mile race. 

Ally Campbell led the Scottsboro effort with a fourth-place finish (12:56.39) while Smith Bradford was 10th (13:57.69), Makenna Howes 11th (13:58.93), Mia Martin 12th (13:59.47), Gracy Cole 13th (14:04.92), Cambree Bradford 20th (14:31.23), Lauren Judge 28th (15:21.81), Shelby McLaughlin 68th (17:28.72), Macey Frazier 85th (18:18.04), Avery Earnest 91st (18:33.60), Ashley Dunsmore 94th (18:51.90) and Grayce Smith 105th (20:05.17).
