The Scottsboro varsity girls basketball team’s seniors will get to play one more game at Hambrick Hall.
The Wildcats went on the road and defeated No. 7-ranked Brewer 36-32 to win the Class 5A Area 15 Tournament championship Thursday night at Brewer High School in Florette.
“It was a hard-fought battle,” said Scottsboro head coach Brandon Childers. “We won the effort battle this time. When we beat them [at Scottsboro Nov. 27] I think we won the effort battle, and when they beat us last month I think they won the effort battle. We made some good defensive adjustments and didn’t give them anything easy.”
It was the Wildcats’ second straight area championship. Scottsboro (21-10) hosts a Class 5A Northeast Sub-regional game on Monday at 7 p.m.
“It’s big for our team, big for our seniors to get one more home game,” Childers said.
Thursday’s Area 15 championship game was close throughout. The game was tied 13-all after one quarter and Scottsboro led 19-18 at halftime before Brewer moved in front 29-28 after three quarters. The score was tied 32-all late in the fourth quarter when Carley Bell hit the go-ahead bucket. Trailing 34-32, Brewer had one last chance to tie or take the lead, but Scottsboro’s Keara Sexton stole its inbounds pass with 12 seconds left and made a layup to clinch the win for the Wildcats.
Sexton scored a game-high 17 points for Scottsboro while Carley Bell netted 11 and Emily Garner, playing through sickness, added six.
The Wildcats host the Class 5A Area 13 runner-up, either Boaz or Sardis, on Monday at 7 p.m. at Hambrick Hall. Boaz and Sardis played in the Area 13 Tournament finals late Friday at Boaz High School. Brewer (21-9) plays the Area 13 champion Monday.
Sub-regional winners advance to the Class 5A Northeast Regional at Jacksonville State University.
Scottsboro extended its winning streak to five with the area finals win.
“I like how we’re playing right now,” Childers said.
