The Alabama Sports Writers Association released its 2018 All-State Teams this week and eight Jackson County players received either first-team, second-team or honorable mention honors.
North Jackson had four players recognized, North Sand Mountain had three and Scottsboro one.
Scottsboro’s Bradford Womack was a first-team selection in Class 5A, while North Jackson’s Lee Witherspoon, Ronaldo Marmelejo, Travis Woodall were first-team picks in 4A and NSM’s Austin Hill was a first-team pick in Class 2A. NSM’s Stone Yates and North Jackson’s Jody Moore were second-team all-state selections respectively in Class 2A and 4A while NSM’s Landon Green was tabbed honorable mention in 2A.
Womack was named Class 5A first-team all-state as an offensive lineman. The senior center, which was selected to play in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game, started for Scottsboro for three seasons in 2015, 2016 and 2018. He missed the 2017 season because of injury. Womack also played on the defensive line for the Wildcats.
Witherspoon, a senior running back and a Mississippi State signee, ran for a school-record 2,846 yards on 148 carries (19.3 yards per carry) and totaled a state-record 53 rushing touchdowns. He scored a state-record 59 touchdown in all this season for the Chiefs, who went 11-1 and won the Class 4A Region 7 championship.
Marmolejo, a senior, was a first-team all-state offensive lineman for a North Jackson line that produced 5,091 rushing yards and 87 rushing touchdowns for an offense that averaged 56.4 points per game.
Woodall, a senior, was a first-team all-state selection at linebacker after leading the Chiefs with 174 tackles (16 for a loss) with five sacks, two fumble recoveries, an interception and a blocked field goal.
Moore, a junior, was a second-team all-state selection as a defensive lineman, recorded 63 tackles and a team-high eight sacks and 17 total tackles for a loss. He also scored a touchdown on a blocked punt.
Hill, a senior, was a first-team Class 2A all-state receiver after posting a team-leading 38 catches for 772 yards and 12 touchdowns as NSM went 8-3 and reached the Class 2A playoffs. He also ran for 223 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries and had four kickoff returns for 152 yards and one touchdown.
Yates, a senior, was a second-team selection as a defensive back, posted 58 tackles, including two for a loss, and a team-high three interceptions.
Green, a junior, was an honorable mention quarterback after completing 110-of-188 passing for 1,893 yards and 22 touchdowns while also rushing for 305 yards and seven touchdowns on 56 carries while direction an NSM offense that averaged 38.1 points per game.
