The Scottsboro girls and boys cross country teams did not post perfect scores in the Last Chance Invitational.

But, by head coach Luke Robinson’s standards, they ran perfect races.

“In my mind, a perfect race is when you can look your teammates in the eye and say I gave everything I had on that course,” Robinson said. “From what I saw, everybody did that.”

Scottsboro finished second in the Class 5A-7A varsity boys 5K race and third in the 5A-7A girls race Thursday at the Scottsboro High School’s John R. Esslinger Trial of Champions. Huntsville (32 points) edged Scottsboro by 12 points in the boys standings while Fort Payne and Oak Mountain — Fort Payne won the title via tiebreaker — finished 14 points better than Scottsboro in the girls standings.

“As a whole,” Robinson said, “the (performances) were epic. Lot of fast times. Fifteen boys set a new personal record. Nine girls did.”

Cooper Atkins set a couple of records during the meet. The junior set new course and school records on his way to winning the 5A-7A boys race with a time of 15:16.20.

Atkins and Thursday’s fourth-place finisher Hayden Judge (15:29.05) have broken the school record several times over the last month.

“It’s really exciting to see what they’re doing,” Robinson said.

Rex Green added a ninth-place finish (16:09.82) for the Wildcats while Zach Avenel was 11th (16:17.43), Evan Hill 18th (16:35.95), Josue Vela Castillo 19th (16:36.51), Noah Bonsall 23rd (16:51.31), Ben Gossett 24th (16:52.11), Hamilton Richardson 25th (16:53.42), Josh Hill 29th (17:06.21), Brady Thomas 30th (17:06.31), Jackson Howes 60th (17:59.55), Wilson Hill 67th (18:17.61), Johny Felix 70th (18:18.91), Ridge Wells 85th (18:43.01), Alex Avenel 94th (18:59.45), River Green 105th (19:16.20), Joe Black 135th (20:03.60), Skylar Reichle 136th (20:09.42), Jo Carlile 154th (20:59.70), John Merritt 158th (21:08.92), Christian Kilgore 165th (21:20.21), Nathan Bearden 171st (21:35.90) and Colin Selenerick 198th (22:58.40).
