Sentinel "Sports Figures" is a combination of people, numbers and dates in regards to sports and sports history in Jackson County.


Johnny Green

Green, a 1986 Section High School graduate, played basketball as a youngster at Macedonia Middle School and Section before entering the coaching ranks. Green was hired as a history teacher at Macedonia, where he has served as the school’s girls and boys basketball teams head coach since 1991. In 29 seasons, Green’s teams have won a combined 662 games and eight Jackson County Middle School Tournament championships (five boys titles and three girls titles). His teams have played in the county finals 20 times in all, and Macedonia swept the both the boys and girls division championships during the 2013 season.

The Stevenson football team rallied from a 16-0 second-half deficit to post a 20-16 win over their rivals from nearby Jasper, Tennessee. Stevenson pulled within 16-8 in the third quarter when Bo Jack Loyd threw a 15-yard touchdown pass and a two-point conversion pass to Mike Allen. Loyd found Allen for a 31-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter to pull the Panthers within 16-14. Stevenson then took the lead with 3:40 remaining in the fourth quarter when David West caught a pass from Loyd and lateraled to Tommy Gamble, who went 34 yards for the go-ahead score.


The Scottsboro volleyball team swept a tri-match with Brindlee Mountain and archrival North Jackson. The Wildcats swept the Chiefs 25-6, 25-15. Brianna Smith was 6-of-6 on attacks with three kills while Morgan Rogers was 6-of-6 with one kill. Emily Glover finished 12-for-12 with seven aces on serves while Jordan Combs was 7-of-7 and Alyson Mavromat 5-of-5. Combs was also 5-of-5 on serve receive. Scottsboro posted a 25-19, 25-15 win over Brindlee Mountain. Rogers was 13-of-16 on attacks with three kills while Smith had two kills and Combs had one. Mavromat went 10-for-10 on serve receive while Rogers was 9-of-9 and Combs was 13-of-15. On serves, Glover posted three aces while Combs and Mavromat each had two.
