The North Sand Mountain varsity girls basketball team picked up a win over a county rival.

The Bison edged Section 26-21 in a low-scoring Class 2A Area 15 contest Tuesday night in Higdon.

NSM’s win means it and Section will flip a coin to determine the No. 3-seed in next month’s area tournament.

NSM (2-11, 1-5) trailed 5-0 after one quarter but rallied in front 12-11 at halftime. The game was tied 19-all after three quarters, but the Bison outscored Section 8-2 in the final stanza to earn the win.

Vicky Hassell scored eight points for NSM while Kolbie Bobo added seven and Jesse Weldon had six. 

Haley Smart led Section with eight points while Madison Armstrong had six and Savannah White had five.


North Jackson 45, New Hope 17 — At New Hope, Class 4A No. 8-ranked North Jackson put the clamps down defensively on New Hope on the way to its 10th win in its last 11 games.

North Jackson (15-6) jumped out to a 19-1 lead after one quarter and was in front 31-8 at halftime and 38-10 after three quarters.

The Chiefs’ leading scorers were Summer Varnum with 11 points, Delana Pierce with 10, Sarah Morgan with nine and Alexis Moore with six.

Kayley Yarbrough scored five points to lead New Hope (14-8), which is coached by Skyline alum Craig McGill.


Skyline 83, Cleveland 44 — At Cleveland, the Class 1A No. 2-ranked Vikings dominated the final three quarters to extended their winning streak to seven games.

Skyline (18-2) led just 18-17 after one quarter before extending its lead to 38-27 at halftime and 61-38 after three quarters.

Gracie Stucky led four Vikings who scored in double figures with 25 points. Bailee Usrey poured in 23 points while Aidan Bellomy and Kenzie Manning netted 12 each.

Josie Rodham scored 17 points and Riley Robertson added nine for Cleveland (7-10).
