The Scottsboro swim teams enjoyed strong debuts to the 2016 season.
Scottsboro finished fourth in the varsity boys division and fifth in the varsity girls division during the Grissom Invitational Thursday night at the Huntsville Natatorium. The SHS teams finished fourth in the combination standings.
The meet was Shalyn Benson’s debut as Scottsboro’s head coach.
“It was a late night — the meet didn’t start until 8:30 p.m. My kids were already nervous because this was our first meet and most of the other teams started [in early September],” Benson said. “But they got in and started turning in personal best times and really had some fun. I was proud of them.”
Scottsboro was the top Class 5A finisher in each division.
Class 7A squads Huntsville (290 points), Bob Jones (266) and Grissom (228) finished ahead of Scottsboro (102) in the varsity boys standings.
Kyle Vosen had a pair of first-place finishes for the SHS boys. He won the 200-yard Individual Medley with a personal record time of 1:59.84 and won the 100-yard Backstroke with a PR time of 55.48 seconds.
Tony Pereira finished fourth in both the 50-yard Freestyle (24.00) and the 100-yard Butterfly (58.49) while Ben Gossett finished fourth in the 100-yard Freestyle (PR time of 56.08) and sixth in the 100-yard Breaststroke (1:14.44).
Tanner Gossett finished 10th in the 100-yard Butterfly (1:28.14) and 20th in the 50-yard Freestyle (PR time of 31.76) while John Dalton Sanders finished 11th in the 100-yard Backstroke (PR time of 1:22.93) and 19th in the 50-yard Freestyle (PR time of 30.69). Will Rogers finished 14th in both the 100-yard Freestyle (1:06.08) and the 100-yard Breaststroke (1:22.15) while Cole Bellomy finished 18th in the 100-yard Freestyle (1:13.10) and 19th in the 100-yard Breaststroke (1:33.75).
Scottsboro posted top-six finishes in the relay races. Vosen, Pereira, Bellomy and Ben Gossett teamed up to finish fourth in the 200-yard Medley Relay (1:53.28) while Pereira, Rogers, Vosen and Ben Gossett finished fourth in the 200-yard Freestyle Relay (1:43.24). Bellomy, Sanders, Rogers and Tanner Gossett finished sixth in the 400-yard Freestyle Relay (5:00.82).
Scottsboro closed with 35 points in the varsity girls standings, trailing only 7A teams Bob Jones (139), Huntsville (122) and Grissom (117) and 6A Athens (72).
Olyvia Stone had the top finish for the SHS girls, placing third in the 100-yard Freestyle with a time of 58.81 seconds. She also finished 12th in the 100-yard Breaststroke (1:23.42).
Cheyenne Vincent finished eighth in the 500-yard freestyle (PR time of 6:17.91) and 11th in the 100-yard Breaststroke (PR time of 1:23.22) while Claire Megehee finished eighth in the 100-yard Butterfly (1:12.49) and 13th in the 200-yard Individual Medley (2:47.70). Katharyn Sanders finished 10th in the 50-yard Freestyle (27.80) while Jessica Vincent finished 10th in the 100-yard Backstroke (1:15.54) and 15th in the 50-yard Freestyle (29.04). Kaitlin Rossmeier finished 14th in the 200-yard Freestyle (2:42.10) and 19th in the 100-yard Breaststroke (1:35.63) and Maddy Childress finished 14th in the 100-yard Butterfly (1:33.25) and 27th in the 50-yard Freestyle (33.11) while Bailey McLaughlin was 20th in the 100-yard Freestyle (1:16.11) and 21st in the 100-yard Backstroke (1:15.54). Paige Megehee had a PR time of 35.09 in the 50-yard Freestyle.
In the relay races, Stone, Sanders, Claire Megehee and Cheyenne Vincent teamed up for a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard Freestyle (1:52.18) while Rossmeier, Childress, McLaughlin and Paige Megehee finished 11th (2:21.11). Stone, Sanders, Claire Megehee and Jessica Vincent finished sixth (2:10.58) in the 200-yard Medley Relay while Childress, Rossmeier, Cheyenne Vincent and Jessica Vincent finished sixth (4:42.69) in the 400-yard Freestyle Relay.
Scottsboro’s next meet is the Bob Jones Invitational on Oct. 11.
