The Section football team is getting healthy at the right time.
After missing five starters a week ago, Section should be at or close to full strength heading into Friday’s game at Sand Rock.
“I think we’ll have everybody back,” said Section head coach Chris Hammon. “That’s big for us.”
It’s a welcome thing for Section (1-5, 1-3), which faces a win-out scenario in Class 2A Region 8 play in order to have any chance at reaching the playoffs.
“It’s a tough challenge, but we’ve still got a shot,” Hammon said. “We need to get things turned around heading toward the end of the season. That’s got to start on Friday.”
The game kicks off at 7 p.m. at Sand Rock’s Russell Jacoway Stadium. It’s the 21st meeting between the teams in a series Sand Rock leads 15-3-2. Section won last year’s meeting 24-14.
Sand Rock (2-4, 1-3) enters the game in the same situation regarding the playoffs as Section. The Wildcats have lost four straight games, including a 55-0 defeat to region-leading and top-ranked Fyffe last week.
Sand Rock’s defense was strong early on but have allowed 99 points the last two weeks. But the Wildcats played without its middle linebackers last week and Hammon said their absence hurt the Wildcats.
“They’re two good looking linebackers, real good players,” Hammon said. “They’ve been real good defensively. It’s going to be a challenge for us. Sand Rock is always a tough place to play.”
