New Ider coach

Blaine Smith has been hired as the new varsity boys basketball head coach at Ider High School.

A former Jackson County player and coach is taking on the task of rebuilding the Ider boys basketball program.

Pisgah alum and former Section assistant coach Blaine Smith has been hired as the new varsity boys basketball head coach at Ider High School. Smith’s hiring was made official during Wednesday’s DeKalb County Board of Education meeting.

“I’m excited to get the opportunity,” said Smith, who is the son of Woodville varsity girls and boys basketball head coach    Bubba Smith.

“Ider’s had success in the past. I felt like they’re committed to having a good program. The community wants that. The players want that. I think they’re willing to work to have it.”

Blaine Smith spent the past two seasons as a junior high boys basketball head coach at Albertville after graduating from Athens State University. While he was still in college, Smith was an assistant at Sylvania in 2013 before working as an assistant for two seasons each at Pisgah (2014-15) and Section (2016-17). He assisted his father at Sylvania, Woody Beard at Pisgah, Jamie Pruett at Section and worked in the Albertville program under Patrick Harding.

“I worked for some great men, great coaches,” Smith said. “They all have different perspectives of the game and all of them helped me tremendously.”

At Ider, Smith inherits a program that won only one game a year ago but is eager to return to its winning ways of a decade ago, Smith said.

“We know it’s going to take some time; got a lot of work ahead of us,” he said. “But when I met the team, I think they’re eager to learn, to be coached and work to improve.”
