HIGDON — What the North Sand Mountain football team started back on Aug. 22 it finished Friday night.
After shutting out Cedar Bluff 20-0 in a two-quarter scrimmage in the preseason, NSM routed the undefeated Tigers 55-22 in a Class 2A Region 8 contest at NSM’s Lloyd Dobbins Field.
The Bison built a 28-6 halftime lead en route to a victory that head coach Keith Kirby said was the team’s most complete performance of the season thus far.
“It was definitely a step in the right direction. We’ve been knocked down a couple times but they’ve gotten up off the mat and showed what they’ve got,” said Kirby, whose team was coming off a 43-36 non-region loss at Sylvania. “The boys came out with a lot of emotion and played really well.”
NSM (4-2, 3-1) rushed for 278 yards and had 393 total yards.
Landon Green threw for 115 yards and two touchdowns on 7-of-9 passing for the Bison while Damon Gentle ran for 141 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. Fernando Luna also ran for 60 yards and a touchdown and Cade McBryar added 45 yards and a touchdown while Green rushed for 30 yards and two scores. Lake Bell caught five passes for 73 yards and one score for the Bison.
NSM opened the scoring early in the first quarter on Luna’s 7-yard touchdown run and his two-point conversion run. Lake Bell then caught 22-yard touchdown pass to push NSM in front 14-0 late in the first, and Green scored on an 18-yard touchdown run and Bell ran for the two-point conversion for a 22-0 lead early in the second quarter. After Cedar Bluff (5-1, 3-1) pulled within 22-6, NSM got a defensive score just before halftime on Gentle’s 50-yard interception return for a touchdown.
Green threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Derek Bearden and ran for a 5-yard touchdown to give the Bison a 42-14 lead after three quarters. NSM got touchdown runs of 22 yards by McBryar and 6 yards from Gentle in the fourth quarter to close it out.
