The Scottsboro wrestling team used a pair of strong performances to earn a spot in the Class 5A-6A Region 7 Duals.
The Wildcats defeated Alexandria 51-30 and Southside 66-12 Tuesday night at Scottsboro's Carter Gymnasium.
Scottsboro advanced to the semifinal round late Friday night where it was scheduled to wrestle Fort Payne for a spot in the region finals and a berth in the AHSAA Class 5A-6A State Duals Championship. Arab received a bye into the finals after Alexandria chose not to attend Friday’s region duals conclusion.
The region semifinal and finals matches were originally scheduled for Thursday but were postponed until Friday because of the threat of winter weather on Thursday.
Against Alexandria, John Stewart needed just nine seconds to win via pin in the 120-pound weight class for Scottsboro, which also got wins via pin from Clinton Stewart at 132, Thomas Rackler at 138, Ansel Goggans at 145, Aiden Goggans at 152, Porter Mitchem at 182 and Kolby Clark at 195. Stone Staton posted an 11-4 decision victory at 106 pounds while Matthew Dupree received a win via forfeit at 126.
Against Southside, Scottsboro got wins via pin from Staton (106) Aiden Goggans (152), Colton Durham (160), Clark (195) and Nate Warren (220), wins via forfeit by John Stewart (120), Clinton Stewart (12 6) and Lucas Bellamy (285), a technical fall win by Cole Synder (138), an 18-4 major decision win from Josh Draskovic (132) and a 7-1 decision win from Ansel Goggans (145).
