The North Sand Mountain golf team narrowly missed qualifying for the state tournament a year ago.

A year later, NSM left no doubt it was going to state.

The Bison posted a team score of 349, winning by 62 shots to claim the Class 1A-2A North 1 Sub-State Tournament title at Limestone Springs Golf Club in Oneonta on Monday.

NSM advanced to play in the 2019 AHSAA Golf Championship’s Class 1A-2A Boys State Golf Tournament May 13-14 at The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail’s Capitol Hill Senator Course in Prattville.

“The guys are very excited,” said NSM head coach Tracy Vest. “It’s great for these four seniors. This is something they’ve wanted to do since they were freshman.”

It’s NSM’s first state golf tournament appearance since 2000. That team, also coached by Vest, finished fifth.

Tanner Stone led the NSM effort with an 82, followed by Hunter Vest with an 84, Noah Higdon a 91, Jarrett Hill a 92 and Jordan Moon a 95.

“We played fairly well. We probably could’ve shot around 340, but 349 wasn’t too bad on that course,” Track Vest said. “It wasn’t that long, but it was tight. If you hit one in the woods, you might as well (take a drop).”

Red Bay was the other North 1 Sub-State qualifier after shooting a 411. The South 1 Sub-State qualifiers were Brantley and Donoho.

NSM plays a practice round at the Senator Course on Sunday before beginning the two-round tournament on Monday, May 13.

“We’ll play it, take some notes and go from there,” Tracy Vest said.
