Scottsboro wrestlers will pursue state tournament berths in this weekend.

Seven Wildcats will compete in the Class 1A-5A North Super Section Friday and Saturday at the Bill Harris Arena at the Birmingham Crossplex.

Admission is $8 per day.

The top-eight wrestlers in each weight class advance to the AHSAA State Wrestling Championships in Huntsville Feb. 13-15.

Wrestling for the Scottsboro at the North Super Section will be sophomore Mason McKenzie (18-9) in the 106-pound weight class, sophomore Clinton Stewart (28-4) at 126, freshman Aaron Clark (6-2) at 145, freshman Russell Proctor (25-5) at 152, senior Travis Keagan (8-12) at 160, sophomore Lucas Bellamy (12-11) at 220 and Kolby Clark (20-7) at 285.

McKenzie, Stewart, Proctor and Aaron Clark wrestled at sectionals a year ago.

The brackets for each weight class will be determined during a coaches meeting today.

Scottsboro head coach Chris Staton said his team has several wrestlers capable of advancing to state.

“We don’t have the numbers (to factor in the team standings), so just focus on our individual efforts. There’s no pressure. We’ve got some that need to build experience. And it’s time for a few kids to take a step forward. They just have to go and let it fly.”
