The Woodville baseball team fell just shy of earning a playoff berth.
The Panthers lost 12-2 to Valley Head in the decisive Game 3 of the team’s Class 1A Area 15 series on Friday at the Fort Payne Sports Complex.
Valley Head (1-3 in area play) earned the area’s final playoff berth by winning the tiebreaker game, which did not count in the area standings but served as a head-to-head tiebreaker between the teams.
The Tigers scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning. After Woodville (1-12, 1-3) cut the deficit to 4-2, Valley Head scored a run in the fourth before pushing across seven in the bottom of the fifth.
Josh Drawbaugh and Nathan Gardner had a hit and an RBI apiece for the Panthers while Ben Minor, Jacob Chambers and Camron Talley had one hit each.
Woodville (1-12, 1-3) won Game 2 of the series earlier Friday to force the tiebreaker game.
The game was scoreless after four innings, but Woodville took a 1-0 lead when Brett Berger singled and scored three batters later on Logan Boggs’ RBI single.
The Panthers added another run in the sixth when Talley walked and stole second and third base before scoring on a Valley Head error. Valley Head pulled within 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth, but Woodville got an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Drawbaugh doubled and scored.
Drawbaugh reached base in all four of his plate appearances, closing with two hits, a walk and a hit by pitch. Blake Lands finished 2-for-4 while Boggs and Berger had one hit each.
Drawbaugh and Lands combined on a four-hitter on the mound. Drawbaugh pitched five innings and got the win while recording nine strikeouts. Lands pitched the final two innings and struck out three on his way to earning the save.
