The third-seeded Scottsboro volleyball team surged late to take a 1-0 lead in its best-of-five Class 6A Area 13 Tournament semifinal game with second-seeded Southside on Tuesday at Albertville High School.
But unfortunately for the Wildcats, the momentum from the opening game win did not last.
Southside rallied to win three straight games and defeat Scottsboro 24-26, 25-12, 25-14, 25-17 and advance to the area championship match — top-seeded Albertville swept Southside in the finals — while earning a berth in North Super Regional Friday and Saturday in Huntsville.
“We came out very strong in the first set and came from behind to win the set. The girls were confident and our hitters were swinging,” Scottsboro head coach Kelly Scott said. “We got in a hole the second set and couldn't find a way to get it back. The next two sets we just couldn't find our rhythm.”
Scottsboro trailed 24-22 in Game 1 before scoring four consecutive points — all on service points from Nhi Lee — to take the win. Southside jumped out to leads of 8-1 and 6-0 in the next two games to take a 2-1 lead before using an 8-1 scoring run late in Game 4 to close out the match.
Senior Meg Garner finished with 14 kills, four blocks and 14 digs for Scottsboro while Lee had 11 kills and nine digs. Jocelyn Cheatom had five kills and two blocks while senior Caley Cooper had 16 digs and Bailey Cole had 33 assists.
Garner and Cooper were selected to the all-area team.
The loss ended Scottsboro’s season at 11-15.
“The girls have worked hard this season to improve their game. Even though we didn't pull out a win I am still proud of the girls for their hard work and willingness to improve. We will miss our four seniors very much next year. They have been a huge part in our successes this season,” Scott said.
“It is time to get to work developing our younger talent and continuing to improve our skills. It's my goal to continue to grow this program and develop the younger athletes' volleyball skills.”
