The first-year North Jackson wrestling program is just a two-man team, but that two-man team packed a punch at the Class 1A-5A North Super Section Tournament.
Twin brothers Tanner and Travis Woodall both qualified for the 2018 AHSAA Wrestling Championships after winning their respective weight class championships during the sectional tournament at the Birmingham Crossplex last weekend.
Tanner Woodall (26-2) won the 195-pound weight class title while Travis Woodall (27-4) captured the 220 championship. Both wrestlers went 4-0 during the sectional and won three of their four matches via pin.
Their efforts totaled 60.5 points, which was good enough to give North Jackson a 16th-place finish out of 31 teams in the team standings.
In the 195-pound weight class final, Tanner Woodall posted a 14-1 major decision victory over Susan Moore’s Anthony Cervantes. Meanwhile, Travis Woodall defeated Scottsboro’s Caleb Anderson via pin (3:59) in the 220-championship game. Travis Woodall also won a close 4-3 decision over Arab’s Jack Tindall in the 220 semifinals.
The state wrestling tournament begins Thursday and runs through Saturday at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville. Both Woodalls will be the North’s No. 1 seed in their respective weight class and will face the South Super Section’s No. 8 seeds in the opening round.
