Lee Witherspoon’s record-setting night helped North Jackson cap a perfect regular season.

During the Chiefs’ 41-22 win over Arab, the senior running back ran 18 times for 357 yards and five touchdowns, which gave him a new AHSAA state record for touchdowns scored in a single season with 54. 

Witherspoon eclipsed the old record of 53, set by Beauregard’s La’Damian Webb in 15 games in 2016. The National High School Federation record is 71. Witherspoon is just two rushing touchdowns shy of breaking the AHSAA state single-season rushing touchdown record. He has 2,523 yards on 114 carries (21.8 yards per carry). The single-season state rushing record is 3,483 yards.

For his efforts, Witherspoon has been named The Jackson County Sentinel Prep Football Honor Roll Player of the Week. Other notable performances from Week 10 of the prep football season were:

› Jackson Peek, Woodville — The sophomore ran for 87 yards and two touchdowns and passed for 95 yards and a touchdown on offense while recording three tackles, an interception and fumble recovery on defense during the Panthers’ 34-24 win over Section. 

› Colton Pettijohn, NSM — The senior rushed for 77 yards and two touchdowns on three carries on offense while recording five tackles on defense during the Bison’s 40-6 win over Pisgah.

› Travis Woodall, North Jackson — The senior recorded 23 tackles and blocked a kick during the Chiefs’ win over Arab.

› Blake Frazier, Woodville — The senior caught two passes for 24 yards and a touchdown, caught a two-point conversion, kicked two PATS and had five tackles and an interception during the Panthers’ win over Section.

› A.J. Widgeon, Scottsboro — The junior recorded 14 tackles, including two for a loss and one quarterback sack, during the Wildcats’ loss to Hartselle.

› Stone Yates, NSM — The senior recorded five tackles and an interception during the Bison’s win over Pisgah.

› Caden Hicks, Section — The senior ran for 64 yards and a two-point conversion and caught two passes for 30 yards on offense while recording nine tackles and two interceptions on defense during the Lions’ loss to Woodville.

› Mitchell McKenzie, Woodville — The senior recorded nine tackles and forced a fumble during the Panthers’ win over Section.

› Deshawn Ware, North Jackson — The senior ran for 42 yards and a touchdown on five carries on offense and recorded eight tackles on defense during the Chiefs’ win over Arab.

› Landon Green, NSM — The junior was 6-of-8 passing for 129 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 34 yards on two carries during the Bison’s win over Pisgah.

› Anthony Scott, Section — The junior recorded eight tackles and an interception during the Lions’ loss to Woodville.

›  Da’vion Johnson, Woodville — The senior ran for 75 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries and caught three passes for 91 yards during the Panthers’ win over Section.

› Ezra Crowder, NSM — The senior recorded five tackles, including three for a loss, and a quarterback hurry during the Bison’s win over Pisgah.

› Noah Linville, Scottsboro — The sophomore recorded 13 tackles during the Wildcats’ loss to Hartselle.

› Logan Matthews, Section — The senior caught a 91-yard touchdown pass and a two-point conversion during the Lions’ loss to Woodville.

› Austin Hill, NSM — The senior caught two passes for 83 yards and two touchdowns during the Bison’s win over Pisgah.
