The Northeast Alabama Community College men’s golf team is officially in the history books.
NACC played its inaugural match, competing in the Wallace State Men’s Fall Golf Invitational at Cross Creek in Cullman. The golfers played 36 holes on Tuesday and 18 on Wednesday.
The match marked NACC’s first time competing in an Alabama Community College Conference and National Junior College Athletic Association athletic event since the early 1980s.
The Mustangs finished 12th with a total team score of 971, but head coach Darrell Kirk was pleased to see how competitive they were for a first-year program.
“We finished last but were five strokes from 11th, six from 10th and 14 strokes from ninth,” Kirk said. “I wasn’t happy with the results, but we will improve because we saw what we needed to work on during practice and they know they have to work on their individual game during their off days said. I think the boys will learn from last weekend and have a better showing [Sept. 25th and 26th at Gunters Landing.”
Trevor Gibson of Rainsville led the way for NACC, shooting a 54-hole total of 233.
Caleb Little of Pisgah shot a 241 while Corey Wheeler of Pisgah shot a 248, Ethan Everett of Trenton, Georgia shot a 255, Hunter Hill of Higdon shot a 265 and Cory Guffey of Pisgah shot a 279.
The NACC women’s golf team plays its first tournament when it travels to Cross Creek for the Wallace State Women’s Fall Invitational on Tuesday and Wednesday.
