The Scottsboro swimming teams swam their way to a pair of Top-10 finishes during the 2019 AHSAA Swimming and Diving Championships.
Scottsboro finished sixth (97 points) in the Class 1A-5A girls division standings and was seventh (134 points) in the 1A-5A varsity boys standings during the state meet at Auburn University over the weekend.
Scottsboro swimmers also frequented the medal stand during the meet.
“We achieved near our projected points and brought home 10 medals,” said Scottsboro head coach Shalyn Benson. “It's so much fun to see all of their hard work come together in our season closer.”
Levi Webb had the best finish among all Scottsboro swimmers, finishing second and claiming a silver medal in the Class 1A-4A boys 100-yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:03.03. Kaje Jordan had the best finish for Scottsboro divers, placing second in the 1A-5A boys diving competition and claiming silver with a score of 259.70.
Webb was also part of Scottsboro’s third-place finishing, bronze-medalist 400-yard Freestyle boys relay team (3:39.94) with Arlen Parr, Luke Armour and John Dalton Sanders.
Scottsboro’s 400-yard Freestyle relay team finished third in the 1A-5A girls race. The team of Paula Nunez, Olyvia Stone, Paige Giles and Mary Cook took bronze with a time a of 4:03.30.
Nunez, Stone, Giles and Cook also finished sixth in the 1A-5A girls 200-yard Medley Relay (2:03.61). Stone also notched a fifth-place finish in the girls 200-yard Freestyle (2:09.83) while Giles was sixth in the 100-yard Butterfly (1:05.48) and Nunez seventh in the 500-yard Freestyle (6:31.80).
Sanders posted a fourth-place finish (51.61) in the 1A-5A boys 100-yard Freestyle race and a seventh-place finish in the 50-yard Freestyle (23.17) while Webb was sixth in the 100-yard Butterfly (55.93). Sanders, Webb, Armour and Jake Benson teamed up for a fifth-place finish in the 1A-5A boys 200-yard Medley Relay (1:53.13).
UMS-Wright of Mobile won the Class 1A-5A girls state championship with 273 points, edging runner-up Whitesburg Christian of Huntsville by two points. In the Class 1A-5A boys division, T.R. Miller, located in Brewton, won the 1A-5A boys state title with a team score of 215. St. Michael Catholic of Mobile was second (196).
