The Scottsboro baseball team’s first-round playoff series will go the distance.
No. 10-ranked Scottsboro (17-9) and Madison Academy (15-23) split the first two games of the first Class 5A best-of-three first-round playoff series on Saturday.
The team play the decisive Game 3 today (Monday) at 5 p.m. at Scottsboro High School. The winner advances to play at Moody in the second round on Friday. Moody swept a first-round series at Parker.
Tennessee Tech signee Christian Herberholz pitched a complete game in Scottsboro’s 3-1 win in Game 1. He allowed just five hits while recording five strikeouts.
Montevallo signee Reed Latimer hit a lead-off home run for the Wildcats. Madison Academy tied the game in the top of the third, but Scottsboro countered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Ethan Wininger walked, went to second on Riley Bennett’s single and scored the go-ahead run on Camden Matthews’ RBI single. After Ethan Clark walked to load the bases, Bennett scored on Dalton Wood’s RBI sacrifice fly.
Matthews and Wininger both had two hits while Latimer, Herberholz and Bennett had one each.
In Game 2, Madison Academy’s Cam Busby pitched a five-hit shutout while recording 13 strikeouts. Busby’s outing overshadowed a strong pitcher performance from Scottsboro’s Bennett, who allowed just three runs (two earned) on five hits while striking out five.
Herberholz and Wood both doubled for the Wildcats while Clark, Kyle Murphy and Peyton Grant all singled.
Madison Academy scored all three of its runs in the first inning. Alex Wade hit a two-run homer for the Mustangs while Brady Merriweather doubled and later scored on a Scottsboro error.
