The Scottsboro varsity girls and boys track and field teams flexed their muscles at the Class 5A Section 4 Meet this past weekend.

The Scottsboro girls and boys teams swept the sectional team titles while qualifying 29 girls event entries and 28 boys event entries for the AHSAA Class 5A State Track and Field Championships Thursday through Saturday in Gulf Shores.

“We have 37 athletes, one of the biggest groups I can every remember going (to state),” said Scottsboro head coach Luke Robinson. “We usually only take one bus. This time, we’re taking two.”

The top-five finishers in each event at sectionals that met state qualifying standards qualified for state. There were also state-wide wildcards issued for the next four best finishers in each event that met state qualifying standards.

Scottsboro won the girls sectional title with a team-point total of 185, well in front of runner-up Arab’s 122.5 points. Scottsboro won the boys title with 157 points, with runner-up Center Point closing with 91.5.

“We just had a lot of people step up this weekend,” Robinson said. “Butler Bell had never done the triple jump and goes 42 feet, now he’s in the mix at state. Jonah Warren, a freshman, he PRs (personal record) in the discus (and qualifies). All three girls qualified in the high jump. Brenly Sanders had a huge PR in the javelin. Baylie Stephenson PRs in discus (and qualifies). Our boys 4x400 crushed it. Just a lot of good performances.”

Scottsboro had six event winners on the girls side, with Lauren Paradise winning the 400-meter dash (1:03.31), Izzy Wynn winning the 800-meter run (2:24.76) and the 300-meter hurdles (48.38), Isabella Noble winning the 3200 (11:51.84), Lauren Hamm winning the high jump (5 feet) and Lauren Paradise, Emily Littles, Emma Hancock and Isabelle Flores teaming up to win the 4x400-meter relay (4:15.47).

Scottsboro won seven events on the boys side, including eighth-grader Maddox Hamm in the pole vault. His winning vault of 14 feet, 8 inches set a new United States Record for a 13-year-old pole vaulter. Cooper Atkins won the 800-meter run (1:59.01), Sam Manning won the Javelin Throw (153-06) and Zach Avenel, Benson Atkins, Hayden Judge and Rex Green teamed up to win the 4x800-meter relay (8:38.13).
