Tanner Barclay recorded 11 strikeouts while pitching a complete-game three-hit shutout during Scottsboro's 10-0 win over Geraldine on Saturday.

The Scottsboro baseball team got its bats going during a doubleheader sweep.

Scottsboro (4-5) posted a 10-1 win over New Hope and a 10-0 victory over Geraldine on Saturday at Scottsboro High School.

Against New Hope, Ethan Wininger went 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored while Gavin McCrary was 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Wildcats while Landon Grider singled and drove in a run. Dalton Wood and Cam Matthews also singled for the Wildcats.

Lane Pitts got the win on the mound after pitching five shutout innings and striking out seven. A.J. Crocker recorded two strikeouts while pitching two innings in relief.

Against Geraldine, Scottsboro built a 4-0 lead after five innings before scoring six runs in the sixth to win the game via the mercy rule.

Ethan Wininger went 2-for-4 for the Wildcats, including a three-run homer during the decisive sixth inning. Matthews, Kyle Murphy and Collin Perkins all had one hit and one RBI each for Scottsboro while Wood, Grider, Tallen Williams and Will Jones had one hit each.

Tanner Barclay recorded 11 strikeouts while pitching a three-hitter on the mound for the Wildcats.

North Jackson sweeps Plainview, Collinsville — At Rainsville, the Chiefs cruised to a pair of wins over Collinsville and Plainview during a split doubleheader Saturday at PHS.

Carter Gass pitched a two-hit shutout with seven strikeouts to help North Jackson (3-5) start the day with a 5-0 win over Plainview (2-4). The senior issued only one walk while throwing 63 of his 95 pitches for strikes.

The game was scoreless after three innings, but the Chiefs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth when Matt Adams scored on Landon Barnes’ RBI single. An RBI single by Brandon Poole and a two-run double by Jody Moore pushed North Jackson in front 4-0 in the fifth, and Brady Cunningham scored on a Plainview error in the sixth.

North Jackson followed the win over the Bears with a 14-5 victory over Collinsville (2-2). 

Brandon Poole went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and four runs scored while also recording seven strikeouts and picking up the win on the mound after pitching 3 2/3 innings in relief.

Adams closed 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored and Macklin Guess was 2-for-3 with three runs scored for the Chiefs while Moore and Dalton Morris had one hit and one RBI each.

Dade County (Ga.) 7, NSM 3 — At Trenton, Georgia, NSM fell to its out-of-state rival Saturday afternoon.

NSM (0-2) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Jayden Culpepper led off the game with a single and scored two batters later on Landon Green’s RBI double. After Dade County responded with a run in the bottom of the first and four runs in the second inning, Dylan Marr’s RBI single drove home his brother Russ to pull the Bison within 5-2 in the top of the fourth. Dade County upped its lead to 7-2 in the fifth before NSM added a run in the top of the seventh when Emanuel Gilley scored on Drake Holland’s fielder’s choice.

Russ Marr finished 3-for-3 with a run scored and Green posted two hits, a walk and one RBI for NSM while Culpepper singled, walked and scored a run. Dylan Marr, Harley Tucker and Derek Bearden had one hit each.

Colton Emmett went 2-for-3 with three RBIs for Dade County (5-1) while Brodie Swader was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Brett Michael Key recorded 10 strikeouts over six innings pitched for the Wolverines. 

Section drops two — At Section, the Lions fell to Sylvania and DAR in a split doubleheader on Saturday.

The Lions fell 15-1 to Sylvania in Game 1. Bo Bradford had an RBI single for Section while Trevier Porter singled and scored a run. Jonathan Carroll and Layne White also singled for the Lions.

Section (1-6) fell to DAR in the second game. Porter went 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored for the Lions and Blake Henry went 2-for-3 with an RBI while Dillan Pope and Jedidiah Sparks had one hit and one RBI apiece.


Pisgah 17, Woodville 3 — At Pisgah, the Eagles scored 11 runs in the bottom of the second inning on the way to the victory over visiting Woodville at Griffith-Talley Field Friday afternoon.

Nate Cornelison went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored while Ridge Medlock hit a two-run homer for Pisgah (1-2). John Burke and Vincent Burke both had one hit and two RBIs and Jackson Wheeler had one hit, one RBI and three runs scored. Andrew Turner had an RBI.

Kristian Wheeler got the win on the mound, recording 12 strikeouts while allowing just one run on one hit over four innings.

Austin Linbom had one hit and one RBI for Woodville while Christian Chambers had one hit and Brett Burger, Trey Stone and Cameron Dolberry scored one run each. 

Buckhorn 3, Scottsboro 1 — At New Market, the Wildcats fell to Class 6A Buckhorn in a pitcher’s duel on Friday.

Both teams were held to just three hits. Tyler Cantrell pitched a complete game for Buckhorn while Brandon Brewer and Tanner Barclay combined for six strikeouts on the mound for Scottsboro.

Buckhorn, coached by former Scottsboro coach Jeff Wood, scored two runs in the second inning and one in the third. Scottsboro scored its lone run in the top of the seventh when Kyle Murphy reached on a Buckhorn error before scoring on Cam Matthews’ RBI single. Ethan Wininger and Sam Bryant also singled for the Wildcats.


Plainview 10, Section 9 — At Rainsville, host Plainview rallied from a nine-run deficit to slip past the Lions Thursday afternoon.

Section scored two runs in the top of the first inning, one in the second and six in the third to take a 9-0 lead. Plainview countered with a five-run bottom of the third before adding one run in the fifth and four runs in the sixth.

Blake Henry went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Dillon Pope had one hit and two RBIs for Section while Trevier Porter had one hit and one RBI and Drake McCutchen and Cole Woods had one RBI each.

Levi Brown went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for Plainview while Tristan Willingham, Ethan Clark and Noah White had one RBI apiece.

Ider 14, Pisgah 5 — At Pisgah, visiting Ider built a 9-2 lead after three innings on the way to the victory.

Ridge Medlock tripled and drove in three runs for Pisgah while Kristian Wheeler had one hit and one RBI. 

Alex Godwin went 4-for-5 with two RBIs for Ider (6-1) while Peyton Hood had three hits and three RBIs and Andrew Blevins had two hits and two RBIs. Ider pitchers Ryan Lassetter, Cody Tinker and Godwin combined for 14 strikeouts. 


Section 13, Pisgah 0 — At Pisgah, Trevier Porter and Cole Woods hit back-to-back homers during Section’s seven-run second inning as the Lions picked up mercy-rule shortened rivalry win on Feb. 25.

Porter and Woods had one hit and three RBIs each for Section while Bo Bradford had two hits and two RBIs. Drake McCutchen had one hit and two RBIs while Blake Henry, Dillan Pope and Jonathan Carroll had one hit and one RBI each.

McCutchen and Henry combined on two-hit shutout for the Lions on the mound. McCutchen pitched four innings and recorded eight strikeouts while Henry struck out two in one inning pitched.

Jackson Wheeler and John Burke both singled for Pisgah.
