A late-inning Plainview rally kept the North Jackson softball team from posting a season-opening victory.
Plainview scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat the visiting Chiefs 5-4 at The Field of Dreams Complex in Rainsville Saturday afternoon.
North Jackson (0-1) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Ja’Khia Hutchins (hit by a pitch) and Ariel Haynes (reached on an error) scored on Plainview errors. North Jackson then pushed its lead to 4-0 in the top of third inning thanks to solo home runs from Hutchins and Destry Lambert.
Plainview scored a run in the fourth inning on Krimson Kidd’s RBI groundout and another in the fifth on a North Jackson error. The Bears took the lead in the sixth thanks to Tessa Word’s two-run homer and Tobi Trotter’s go-ahead RBI double.
North Jackson got the tying run on base when Avery Wynne drew a two-out walk in the top of the seventh, but Word struck out the next North Jackson batter to end the game.
Lambert closed with two hits and Hutchins had one for North Jackson. Hadley Burnette pitched six innings and recorded five strikeouts for the Chiefs.
Trotter, Word, Kidd, Mia Tidmore and Kenzi Traylor had one hit each for Plainview (1-0). Word pitched scoreless three innings in relief and struck out five to pick up the win in the circle. Starter Lily Boswell pitched four innings and struck out six.
