The Scottsboro cross country teams were great on the Gulf Coast.

The Scottsboro varsity boys and varsity girls teams posted top-three finishes during the 2019 Gulf Coast Stampede in Pensacola, Florida on Saturday.

The SHS boys posted a second-place team finish, narrowly edged by Harrison High School of Kennesaw, Georgia, which swept the varsity race titles. Harrison had a winning low score of 64 while Scottsboro was two points back with 66.

In three races this season, Scottsboro has won two varsity boys races and finished second in one. 

Cooper Atkins and Hayden Judge again paced the Wildcats effort with third and fourth-place finishes respectively in the varsity boys 5K race. Atkins’ time was 16:32.80 and Judge’s was 16:35.40. Rounding out Scottsboro’s top-five scoring runners were Zach Avenel 18th (17:24.20), Rex Green 21st (17:37.70) and Benson Atkins 23rd (17:38.30).

Also for the SHS boys, Evan Hill finished 25th (17:39.40) while Josue Vela Castillo was 30th (17:48.50), Ben Gossett 38th (18:00.00), Noah Bonsall 49th (18:14.10) and Brady Thomas 51st (18:17.60).

Meanwhile, the Scottsboro girls closed with a score of 135. Harrison had the winning low score of 50 and Class 5A rival St. Paul’s Episcopal was second with a score of 125.

Maddie Gossett was Scottsboro’s top finisher for the third straight race this season, finishing 13th with a time of 20:47.20. Ally Campbell finished 24th (21:31.80) for the Wildcats while Emma Bradford was 32nd (21:51.00), Sadie Latham 34th (22:03.40), Cambree Bradford 42nd (22:20.40), Makenna Howes 44th (22:22.60), Mabry Bonsall 47th (22:25.20) and Smith Bradford 61st (22:53.60).

Junior Varsity — Scottsboro won the junior varsity boys 5K race with a near-perfect score after its runners took five of the top-seven spots.

Scottsboro had a winning low score of 21, 25 points better than runner-up Harrison.

Jackson Howes won the race with a time of 18:36.35 while Hamilton Richardson finished second (18:47.35), Ridge Wells fifth (19:17.01), Josh Hill sixth (19:19.37) and Cameron Estes seventh (19:20.88). Stephen Jones placed 12th (19:45.74), Wilson Hill 21st (19:58.62), Johny Felix 46th (20:35.55), Alex Avenel 50th (20:46.11) and River Green 54th (20:47.66).

Meanwhile, Scottsboro finished second in the junior varsity girls 5K race. The Wildcats finished with 92 points, 43 points back of Harrison.

Gracy Coley paced Scottsboro with a time of 23:22.66 while Anna Carlson was 15th (24:56.82), Cadence Laughlin 16th (25:00.26), Sera Laney 26th (25:35.72), Wylie Webb 32nd (26:06.17), Shelton Linville 47th (26:45.50), Kaylee Farr 48th (26:48.75), Katie Jones 49th (26:51.47) and Sadye Webb 102nd (29:33.28).
