The Scottsboro volleyball opened its season on a victorious note.
The Wildcats won the final two games to defeat visiting Sylvania 3-1 in a best-of-five match at Carter Gymnasium on Thursday.
The victory gave new Scottsboro head coach Ashley Smart a winning debut.
Scottsboro (1-0) won the opening game 25-14 before Sylvania (0-1) rallied to the second game 25-23. The Wildcats rebounded by winning the next two games 25-19 and 25-21 to close out the match.
“I am extremely proud of the way our girls played,” Smart said. “Once their first game jitters settled down, it was clear how much they wanted to be on the court together by watching their attitude and effort.
“Starting this season off with a win is a great feeling. I look forward to working with our team to improve on areas that we need to.”
NSM downs Woodville 3-1 — At Higdon, host North Sand Mountain picked up a season-opening win over visiting Woodville.
The Bison won the match 3-1. NSM (1-0) won the first two games 25-15 and 25-18. Woodville (0-1) won the third game 27-25, but NSM closed the match with a 25-13 in Game 4.
Jasmine Higdon recorded 11 kills and three aces for NSM while Jayla Higdon had five aces and one kill, Harley Boyd had four aces and one kill, Candace Rimas had three aces and Briley Bynum had two aces and one kill.
Pisgah sweeps tri-match — At Trenton, Georgia, visiting Pisgah opened its season with a victories over host Dade County and Marion County (Tennessee).
Pisgah (2-0) did not lose a game in either best-of-three matches.
“We played pretty well for our first day,” said Pisgah head coach Carey Ellison. “Molly (Heard) led the way with hits and Bella (Bobo) set the ball well. Our defense was better than expected this early in the season.”
