The Section Lions draw a tough test to begin Class 2A Region 8 play.
The Lions host top-ranked and defending state champion Fyffe Friday at 7 p.m. at Section Stadium.
It’s the 39th all-time meeting between the schools in a series that Fyffe leads 31-7. The Red Devils have won 26 straight games against Section, which posted its last win in the series in 1989.
Not many teams have defeated Fyffe lately. Coach Paul Benefield’s Red Devils have not lost a regular-season game since Week 2 of the 2015 season, a span of 39 games, and have also won 27 consecutive region games.
“Fyffe is Fyffe,” said Section head coach Chris Hammon. “They’re well coached, play hard, play physical and they don’t make many mistakes.
Section (0-1) suffered a 27-0 season-opening loss at New Hope last week. Hammon is hopeful the Lions clean up their miscues from Week 1.
“We have to execute, have to play mistake free. We’ve got to cut out the silly penalties that killed us (in Week 1). We played good defensively, but the difference was penalties and the two turnovers we had.”
Fyffe (1-0), the winner of three of the last five Class 2A state championships, opened its 2019 season last week with a 28-0 win over Class 3A No. 7-ranked Geraldine.
The Lions are the underdog heading into the matchup, but Hammon just wants them to compete.
“We want to get better each week,” Hammon said. “We have a really tough task (this week) but it’s a game that makes us get better.”
