The Scottsboro High School swimming program has its new head coach.

Shalyn Benson was hired during Thursday night’s Scottsboro City Board of Education. The Brownwood Elementary counselor replaces Frances Coleman, who stepped down earlier this year after seven seasons as head coach.

Benson is the second head coach in the history of the program, which began in 2010.

“We’re excited about her taking over,” Scottsboro principal/athletic director Brad Dudley said. “When it came open she contacted me about doing it, and we’re glad she did. It’s a blessing to have her in that spot.”

Benson, a 2000 SHS alum, swam for the Scottsboro Swim Association for 12 years and now her children swim for SSA. She wants to see the high school swimming program continue to thrive.

“I always wanted us to have a high school program when I swam and now that they have one, I want to help make sure it continues to grow and is a great sports program in our [school] system,” Benson said.

“I look forward to working [with the kids]. I know we’ve got a good group of kids.”
